Cancer Researchers Scale Alpe d'Huez to Raise €351,731 in the fight against cancer
This June, over 140 cancer researchers from the Oncode Institute participated in the challenging Alpe d’HuZes event, combining scientific collaboration with athletic endurance to support the fight against cancer.
The team, including Butterfly researchers Martina Jovancheva and Rugile Januskeviciute arrived at the iconic Alpe d’Huez late Monday evening before diving into an intensive scientific program. The following day brought together minds from across the cancer research community to brainstorm new approaches for strengthening cancer research, treatment, and prevention strategies.
But the real test came with the mountain itself. Trading laboratory equipment for athletic gear, Rugile tackled the legendary 21 hairpin bends of Alpe d’Huez by bicycle—completing the grueling ascent twice. Jovancheva chose a different but equally demanding path, conquering the mountain trail on foot through a challenging hike.
The combined efforts of the entire Oncode team resulted in an impressive fundraising total of €351,731 for the KWF Dutch Cancer Society, demonstrating the research community’s commitment extends far beyond the laboratory.
For these cancer researchers, the physical challenge served as a powerful reminder of the perseverance required in their daily scientific work. The climb represented more than personal achievement—it symbolized their dedication to the children and families affected by cancer, while also bringing attention to rare cancers that often receive less public awareness. Well done all!
